MTG God Spikes 308% Thanks to New Lorwyn Eclipsed Mechanic

Share

With 2025 almost completely in the rear-view mirror, players are already looking ahead to 2026 and all that the new year has to offer. In fact, we’re already seeing significant secondary market price fluctuations in anticipation for Lorwyn Eclipsed.

Even though the vast majority of the spoilers from the set have yet to be revealed, recent previews have caused some older synergistic designs to spike in price. In fact, The Scorpion God has spiked significantly following the reveal of a new mechanic that’s already garnering a lot of attention.

The Scorpion God MTG

Since its release back in Hour of Devastation, The Scorpion God hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. Its clunky mana cost has largely prevented it from making much of an impact in Constructed, especially since it doesn’t come with an enters trigger.

With these things in mind, the legend’s best opportunity to shine comes in Commander. In conjunction with cards like Nest of Scarabs and Blowfly Infestation, The Scorpion God is capable of generating a lot of value. Throw in effects like Black Sun’s Zenith and Contagion Engine that put -1/-1 counters on all creatures and you’ll pull pretty far ahead on resources while decimating opposing board states.

Notably, The Scorpion God rewards you with card advantage regardless of who controlled the creature that died. As such, it synergizes nicely with the new Lorwyn Eclipsed Blight cards like Dose of Dawnglow, helping to turn a downside into a benefit. The Scorpion God’s build-around potential is bound to skyrocket as more and more cards featuring the Blight mechanic get previewed. Considering that other unique, old designs such as Harbinger of Night have already risen in price due to their value as -1/-1 counter enablers, it’s only natural that The Scorpion God would spike, too.

Beyond just its strengths in the command zone, The Scorpion God fits nicely alongside one of the Lorwyn Eclipsed precon face Commanders leaked earlier in the week. Being able to put -1/-1 counters on any creature at will, including your own, makes it trivial to get the most out of Auntie Ool, Cursewretch’s second ability.

The Spike

Over the course of most of the last month, The Scorpion God’s price tag has remained relatively consistent. Its lowest point during this period was just $1.13, a stark contrast from the card’s current value. This major difference started because the card experienced a massive increase in demand just under a week ago.

The demand spike occurred a few days after Dose of Dawnglow was previewed, and conveniently, the same day that the Lorwyn Eclipsed precon face Commanders were leaked. While demand has since died down a bit, the sudden surge was enough to cause the market value to rise to $2.70.

Notably, this doesn’t quite tell the full story, since many recent sales have hit the $4 mark. The cheapest current listing comes in at that price, representing a 308% price spike since its lowest point a couple weeks prior.

Unlike some other Commander cards that have gained popularity over the last month, there’s only one traditional printing for The Scorpion God, too. There are other printings for the card, but they are all premium ones that have a limited supply. Sadly, this means that there aren’t any other variants of the card that are available on the cheap.

That said, because the original printing of The Scorpion God is 8 years old at this point, there are some worse conditioned variants available for a slight discount. $2.55, excluding shipping, is the absolute cheapest that a Scorpion God is available for at the time of writing. That said, the worst-conditioned variants of The Scorpion God seem to go for around $3.

A Potential Reprint?

In most cases, picking up The Scorpion God, even for its bloated pricepoint, would make a lot of sense. Lorwyn Eclipsed hasn’t even been released yet, suggesting the card could keep the spike going for some time. That said, the lack of information about upcoming products makes things a bit complicated.

The Scorpion God makes for a perfect reprint candidate in the Blight Curse Commander precon. This legend is extremely synergistic, lacks cheap reprint alternatives, and ultimately doesn’t break the bank even with its recent price spike. If The Scorpion God does get a reprint, players will almost certainly be able to pick it up for even cheaper.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that The Scorpion God won’t see a reprint, making the demand for the card even higher than it is now. While it’s impossible to predict the future, it seems highly likely that this card will see a reprint. We’ll just have to wait and see how things play out, but either way, it’s nice to see such a cool EDH legend like The Scorpion God receive some additional support.
